Principal's Message

Toyah Robey with Bobbi Cordano

Welcome to the Kentucky School for the Deaf where tradition, excellence and innovation are our keystones. Thank you for taking time to visit our website and learning about our nearly 200 year-old rich history of educating students who are deaf or hard of hearing from across the Commonwealth.  Our staff, students and KSD alumni work collaboratively to make this home to approximately 100 students, some of whom live on campus through the week while others travel daily to attend classes from their home district.

All of our staff are dedicated to meeting the academic, social and emotional needs of our students as well as supporting the school districts and families that partner with us.  We have a diverse team that includes Deaf, hearing and those with specialized Deaf education certification.  We understand it is critical we provide learning opportunities that are challenging and engaging to our students in order to best prepare each for college and career readiness.  We believe that deafness is a difference, not a disability. We provide an environment where American Sign Language is our primary language and English a secondary language.

I am Toyah Robey and I am thrilled to have been selected as Principal of the Kentucky School for the Deaf.  I am truly honored to have received the gracious welcome from staff and families.  But, most of all, I am humbled to have received the support from the KSD alumni and the students I work for every day.   To have their trust and partnership is something that I value and hold dear to my “Deaf” heart.  In my education career of nearly 24 years, I have held a variety of positions: special education teacher, consultant and administrator positions with the Kentucky Department of Education and Director of Special Education.  My time at KSD is a privilege and the most exciting and rewarding work I have ever done!  My husband, Greg and I reside in Mercer County on a small cattle farm.  We have two grown daughters, Austin Colleen and Haley Jane, who reside too far away with their wonderful husbands, Blake and Darren.

Thank you for visiting our website as we are focused to reach new heights of success that will positively affect our students, our families, and our Deaf community!  I encourage you to continue to visit our webpage to see the awesome things we have done and are about to do!  Please do not hesitate to contact me directly if you have any questions about our school and the various programs that we offer.
