KSD Reopening School Plan for 2020-2021

February 17, 2021

Dear KSD Parents and Guardians:

After ongoing collaboration with the Boyle County Health Department, the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) and the Kentucky Department for Public Health, the Kentucky School for the Deaf will begin in-person learning on March 1. Students who reside in the dorm will arrive Feb. 28.

We are prepared and excited for the long-awaited return of students! Campus classes are 7:55 a.m. to 3:40 p.m. ET, with dorms opening at 5p.m. ET on Feb. 28.

As always, safety is the first priority for students and staff. We will be implementing the expectations and recommendations within the “Guidance on Safety Expectations and Best Practices for Kentucky Schools” and the “Kentucky School for the Deaf Reopening Plan.” Please take a moment to review these documents to better understand the precautionary measures we will be taking to keep students and staff as safe as possible. Please also discuss with your child the importance of wearing their mask at school, washing their hands frequently and maintaining social distance.

The KSD maintenance and dorm staff have been working diligently to ensure the campus is ready for our students. Frequent cleaning and sanitation will occur to prevent the spread of germs. We have installed Plexiglas barriers in high traffic areas, such as the front desks and library, and placed traffic markers on the floors in the schools and dorms to help students maintain social distancing.

In addition, classrooms have been arranged to allow for at least 6 feet of social distancing. The transition flow patterns that occur between classes also have been revised to increase social distancing. Seating charts have been developed and students will have assigned seating in their classrooms and in the cafeteria to allow for contact tracing should we have an outbreak of the virus.

We want to take this opportunity to thank KSD families for their support during virtual instruction, as we know it has been a challenging task! However, we know that some families prefer to remain with virtual instruction. Please know that with the return to in-person instruction, your child’s virtual classroom schedule may change. Teachers will inform students and families of any changes prior to March 1. Students who are returning to campus will receive their schedules on March 1.

As we resume on-campus classes, it is important that students who remain in virtual instruction continue to attend and participate in all classes according to their assigned schedule every day. Participation in daily class work is essential to ensure your child does not fall behind. Please ensure that your student’s schedule is posted where it can be seen by the student and parents/guardians. We appreciate your supervision to ensure that your child is logged into class and completing all assignments.

Please communicate to your student’s teacher, in advance, if your student will be absent for any reason. Any missed assignments should be completed so they do not negatively impact your child’s grade.

It is expected and vital that you check your child’s temperature each morning before sending them to school. Please do not send your child to school if they show  any of the following: fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, sore throat, congestion, nausea or vomiting, or diarrhea, Please email, call or Video Phone (VP) KSD to let us know your child is sick.

Like all schools and districts, KSD must follow quarantine and isolation procedures. There may be instances when some or all staff or students will be required to quarantine due to illness or exposure. Should this impact your child, you will be expected to make arrangements to pick them up from school that day.

Please review the processes below to help you and your child understand and prepare for the return to campus.

  • Daily temperature checks prior to entering school buildings.
  • Wear a facemask every day on the bus to/from school. Wash your facemask every day.
